Russia amends laws on protected areas

According to a report on the website of the President of the Russian Federation on August 3, President Putin signed a bill to amend the Law on Special Nature Reserves, aimed at improving the management, protection and utilization of protected areas.

The Amendment Act stipulates that land within national nature reserves and national parks is owned by the state and may not change the land use within the national nature reserve; it is forbidden to build large-scale sports facilities and related projects in national parks. And transportation equipment, production and domestic garbage storage sites. The document also stipulates the procedures for visiting protected areas, clarifies the provisions of other laws concerning the management of protected areas, and expands the relevant functions of national environmental inspectors.

In addition, according to the Amendment Act, some national natural biosphere reserves and national nature reserves were required to be converted into national parks, as some of the activities carried out in these protected areas did not meet the requirements of nature reserves, but met the relevant requirements of national parks.
