It was invested and operated by Saudi Arabia Branch of Epure International Ltd. and Sound Global Ltd. was the EPC contractor.

2. Major environmental problems to be addressed

It is built mainly for deal with chemical wastewater of the industrial park and some domestic sewage.

3. Environmental standards and/or main index limits to be followed

According to local irrigation water quality standards, for the effluent, BOD₅≤10 mg/L, COD_cr≤50 mg/L, TSS≤10 mg/L, TKN≤35 mg/L, NH₃-N≤5 mg/L, NO₃-N≤10 mg/L and turbidity≤5 mg/L.

4. Technological process

Influent→ bar screen → aeration sand settling → primary settling → AO process unit → secondary settling → pressure filtration → chlorine contact disinfection → effluent. The sludge treatment adopts the concentration + anaerobic digestion + dewatering process.

5. Environmental pollution control effects

For the influent, BOD₅≤300mg/L, COD_cr≤660mg/L, TSS≤470mg/L, TKN≤55mg/L, NH₃-N≤40mg/L, TP≤18mg/L; For the effluent after treatment, BOD₅≤7mg/L, COD_cr≤35mg/L, TSS≤7mg/L, TKN≤25mg/L, NH₃-N≤2.5mg/L, NO₃-N≤10mg/L and no TP.

6. Social benefits

The project has improved the water environment quality within the region, helped the water-deficient Jubail region to improve the utilization rate of water resources, and provided many jobs for local people.

7. Economic benefits

After the implementation of the project, it saved water treatment costs and expenses.

Project significance: It is the first EPC project for sewage treatment independently won by Chinese companies abroad, which marks the debut of Chinese environmental protection enterprises in the global environmental market, and therefore it has milestone significance.
